Current Exterior Home Design Trends

When it comes to residential architecture, styles and trends come and go. Some trends may last longer than others, but eventually the ever-popular style of a home will no longer be sought after, leaving the remains to be renovated or enhanced by the new homeowner. Below are three of the most popular styles seen recently by Architectural Designs.

Modern Farmhouse

When you think of the term farmhouse, an image of Chip and Joanna Gaines from HGTV’s show Fixer Upper may be your first thought. They have certainly played a role in reviving the classic farmhouse in recent years. For decades, homeowners have been drawn to the warmth and simplistic lifestyle suggested by the farmhouse. However, when a trend teeters on becoming endangered or overplayed, a tweak here and there may resurrect the style. Enter the Modern Farmhouse. Combining the functionality of a farmhouse with aesthetically pleasing features of a contemporary home is a marriage made to last.

Craftsman

Millennials have been known to love the Craftsman style of home due to their focus on handmade, artisanal features, comparable to the DIY movements resurgence that is embraced by so many. This movement values authenticity and originality, which embodies the Craftsman home with its built-in cabinetry, benches, and shelves, as well as the use of natural materials like wood, stone, and brick.

New American

The New American home, often seen in American suburbs, borrows the best elements from a variety of different styles to create a fresh look. With a focus on the interior flow, the New American style of home provides spacious, shared living spaces, allowing the residents to spread out. A blend of siding materials and prominent garages can often be found on the exterior of this style of home.
